Smooth Operator is a 189-page manual on female arousal written for a male reader. It covers clitoral anatomy as currently understood, the arousal response cycle, the distinction between responsive and spontaneous desire, the orgasm gap, and the conversations couples reliably fail to have. Every claim is sourced to peer-reviewed literature. It contains no explicit imagery or narrative content.
The organ went unmapped into this century.
The full three-dimensional anatomy of the clitoris was not accurately described in mainstream medical literature until 2005, when Helen O'Connell published MRI-based imaging in the Journal of Urology. Standard anatomy texts before that truncated the organ at the visible portion, roughly a tenth of the whole.
The nerve-density figure quoted for decades, 8,000 endings, was an estimate. A 2023 count in the Journal of Sexual Medicine revised it past 10,000.
The consequence is a generation of men who experience an educational gap as a personal failing, in a culture that supplied pornography where information should have been. That is the subject of the book, and it is the story worth telling with or without it.
